What is HEIC Format?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It uses the HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) standard for better compression than JPEG while maintaining quality.

Why convert HEIC to JPG?

  • • HEIC isn't supported on older Windows PCs
  • • Many websites and apps only accept JPG/PNG
  • • Easier sharing with non-Apple users
  • • Universal compatibility across all devices

Why Browser-Based HEIC Conversion Matters

iPhone photos often contain sensitive metadata — GPS coordinates, timestamps, and device information. Many online converters require you to upload files to their servers, where your images may be stored temporarily or permanently. ConvertifyHub processes HEIC files locally in your browser using WebAssembly, so your vacation photos, family portraits, and work screenshots never leave your computer.

This matters especially when converting batches of personal photos or images from clients. With our HEIC to JPG converter and the broader image converter, there is no server queue, no email confirmation, and no risk of your files appearing on someone else's infrastructure. Learn more about our approach on the no-upload converter page.

Windows & Mac Compatibility

HEIC is Apple's default photo format, but compatibility outside the Apple ecosystem remains inconsistent. Windows 10 and 11 can preview HEIC files only after installing the HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions from the Microsoft Store — and even then, many apps like older versions of Photoshop, Lightroom, or corporate document systems still reject the format.

On Mac, Preview and Photos handle HEIC natively, but sharing with Windows colleagues, uploading to WordPress, or attaching to Gmail often fails silently or produces broken thumbnails. Converting to JPG before sharing eliminates these friction points entirely.

JPG is supported by every operating system, browser, email client, and social platform without plugins. After conversion, your photos open in File Explorer, Finder, Chrome, Outlook, Slack, and Instagram without extra steps. If you also need lossless editing, consider converting to PNG via our JPG to PNG tool after the initial HEIC-to-JPG step.

Quality & EXIF: Frequently Asked Questions

What quality setting should I use for HEIC to JPG?

For most iPhone photos, 90–95% quality preserves detail indistinguishable from the original while keeping file sizes reasonable. Use 85% for web thumbnails or social media, and 95–100% only when you plan to print or edit further in Photoshop.

Does conversion preserve EXIF metadata?

Yes. ConvertifyHub retains EXIF data including capture date, camera model, orientation, and GPS coordinates when present in the source HEIC file. This is important for photo organization in Lightroom, Apple Photos, and Google Photos after conversion.

Will I lose image quality converting HEIC to JPG?

HEIC already uses lossy compression similar to JPEG. Converting at high quality (90%+) produces visually identical results for screen viewing and social sharing. You may notice minor differences only when zooming to 100% on high-resolution displays or when making multiple re-compression passes.

Can I convert HEIC with Live Photo motion data?

JPG is a still-image format and cannot store Live Photo motion or audio. The converter extracts the key still frame. To preserve the motion component, export the Live Photo as a video from your iPhone first, then use our video converter if needed.

Should I keep the original HEIC files?

If storage space allows, keep HEIC originals in iCloud or on your Mac for archival purposes — they are roughly half the size of equivalent JPG files. Convert to JPG only when you need compatibility for sharing, printing, or uploading to platforms that reject HEIC.

Does JPG support HDR like HEIC?

Standard JPG does not preserve HDR gain maps from iPhone photos. The converted image uses the display-referred tone mapping baked into the HEIC file, which looks correct on most screens but may appear slightly flatter on HDR-capable displays compared to viewing the original in Photos.

Troubleshooting Common HEIC Issues

HEIC file won't open on Windows

Windows does not natively decode HEIC without codec extensions. Rather than installing plugins on every PC, convert to JPG once and distribute the compatible copy. Double-click the output JPG — it opens in Photos, Paint, or any image viewer immediately.

Batch conversion fails or stalls

Large batches (50+ photos) consume significant browser memory. Convert in groups of 20–30 files, close unused tabs, and use Chrome or Edge for best WebAssembly performance. If a single file fails, it may be corrupted — try opening it in iPhone Photos first to verify the source.

Live Photos export as HEIC + MOV pairs

When you AirDrop or export Live Photos to a PC, you may get both a .HEIC still and a .MOV motion file. Convert the .HEIC file for the static image. The .MOV companion contains the 3-second animation and requires separate video handling if you want to share the motion version.

Converted JPG looks rotated or wrong orientation

This usually means EXIF orientation data was stripped by an intermediate tool. ConvertifyHub preserves orientation tags, so the JPG should display correctly. If you edited the HEIC in a third-party app before converting, re-export from Apple Photos to reset metadata.
